I’ve been sitting on this piece for quite some time! I started it a while back when I got back from Cape Town, and it initially started as a pretty sad piece. It was a reflection of my resentment towards an American identity, and a history that tethers my Blackness to a system that seeks to destroy and disenfranchise it. However, as I was hurdling towards graduation and the end of my time at UR, I was prompted by the @spidersengage Bonner program to create a piece that reflected on my experience with community engagement in RVA. Rather than start an entirely new piece, I turned to this one, and realized that it was the community in RVA that kept me together when I felt like life was falling apart. Throughout the years, I’ve been inspired and uplifted by the creative voices in Richmond, and by the dynamic history and energy that charges the city. Reworking this piece made me realize that in spite the turmoil that is taking place in this country and beyond, there will always be people and initiatives that ground the community, that instill hope and pride in spite of adverse efforts, and will continue to push us forwards and hold us together when others try to go backwards and tear us apart.

I am so grateful to RVA - all the artists, my @art_180 and @spidersengage family, friends, and community members - for being a constant source of support and inspiration. I can’t wait to continue to grow, create, and evolve in RVA and beyond!

@art_180 - my home, my love, my happy place. This past wednesday, as a part of a senior celebration and the culmination of my @spidersengage Bonner Scholar program, I got to reflect on the space that would become my peace and solace over the past four years. I had the opportunity to recall some fond ART 180 memories, as well as to really take notice of how much I’ve grown during my time in RVA.

There are truly not enough words that can describe how grateful I am to have found such a creative, dynamic, loving, and transformative community. Through my internship, I’ve prepared gallery walls for wonderful exhibitions, showed work in different shows, painted live in front of various audiences, gained a great connection and mentor through my first residency with @theartseen_ , cultivated relationships with talented artists in the city, connected with community partners, facilitated workshops, and have now curated the 2025 Easel season (talk about a full circle moment, as I was an Easel artist my sophomore year!).

As a black girl at a predominantly white institution, it is easy to feel isolated and troubled at times. However, working with ART 180 and the greater Richmond creative community breathed soul into me whenever I felt low, and lifted me even higher whenever I was happy! As I look forward to graduating a month from today (I still cannot believe it), I am happy to say that my time with ART 180 is not something that I will solely look back on, but rather continue to look forward to because I know they will always be an important part of my life! Thank you to my ART 180 fam, to the RVA artists that mentored me and inspire me, and to all of the support I’ve received through out my creative journey.

Creativity in Cape Town 🇿🇦

Creativity in Cape Town 🇿🇦

During my third month here, I’ve finally started painting!! It was that random wave of inspiration that you have no idea where it comes from, but you’re glad it finally came. Now that I’ve reached the 2 month mark of my time in Cape Town, I have a confession to make. I’ve been struggling through what I initially thought was an artist block. While I’ve been here for a while, I’ve had trouble adjusting to a new country and culture, finding studio spaces and time to sit and paint. However, I’ve come to realize something about myself and artists as a whole - anywhere and anything can truly be considered a creative space and process. I’ve made creations in my dorm room, inside and outside of @art_180 (my home!!), the corner of my mom’s kitchen (trying my very best not to get stains all over her precious floors…), out in the craziest conditions during the @theartseen_ art walks, and more. Even though I haven’t been painting, I’ve been knitting/crocheting, embroidering, reading, writing, and experiencing. All of this is going to lend itself to what I paint in the future, and I’m truly excited to see what those pieces are going to look like. Hopefully in the near future, I’ll get to share that with everyone! In the meantime, I’m excited to continue exploring and learning about South Africa ❤️🇿🇦

finally using the app i paid 10 bucks for 🧏🏾‍♀️✍🏾 The first time I tried drawing digitally was YEARS ago and it was so bad, but quite a few artists i’ve seen have inspired me to try again! I love how portable it is, how i can zoom super close to get details, and the timelapse video that shows the whole process. New skill officially unlocked 🔓

It’s my bday!!! The twins are finally 21 (and apparently many people did not know I have a twin!). Cheers to 21 years of drawing and painting on every surface I can find, of finding my voice through my art, through building stronger connections with my community through art, and for what’s next on my journey. 💕

‼️SHES DONE‼️ Thru The ‘Motions, 30x40

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am an EXTREMELY emotional and moody person. I cry when I watch movies or when I think about just how much I love someone, I smile from ear to ear, sometimes so hard that my face hurts, and I allow my voice and laughter to fill a room, and I get angry. As a black woman, sometimes these emotions are demonized or invalidated, or even seen as a weakness rather than a strength. I created Thru The ‘Motions to send a message to my moody black girls everywhere: allowing yourself to feel every feeling you have to the fullest is an act of power and resistance. It’s an act that allows you to reclaim the humanity many have tried to take away, and to exercise your autonomy over your self preservation and presentation. You can be sad, angry, overjoyed, and anything in between, because you are HUMAN. Your emotions will always be valid.

This painting was a long journey, so I hope everyone is as happy with the outcome as I am. Thank you for sticking with me through it all, and I can’t wait to tackle the next piece. My favorite part about coming home for the holidays is stumbling upon all of my old/unfinished paintings 🥹 I love seeing how I’ve improved, where my mind has been, seeing where I left off and could possibly pick up, how some things about my style have changed but how the focus has seemed to stay the same ❤️

As a Black Woman, I believe in the compassion, humanity, love and unity that drives all movements for liberation. As an artist, I feel firm in my role and my duty as a story teller - a vessel to share the narratives, the hopes and dreams, the despair, the strength, and the beauty of all oppressed peoples - especially for those who can no longer do it themselves. As an artist, I think of the artists who have lost their lives due to the active genocide happening at this very moment, who will never have the opportunity to share their truths as it has been snuffed out by violence, hatred and fear. As a black women, as an artist, and as a human being, i call on myself and others, especially other artists, to bear witness and to speak truth to power in any form that best suits your abilities. Uplift the voices of all who are oppressed through your work, from Palestine to Congo to Sudan to America to the rest of the world.

That being said, I am currently creating a piece in support of Palestinian liberation. I plan to sell prints of this work, along with prints that I already have - proceeds will go towards humanitarian aid for gaza and those impacted by this genocide. I encourage you to follow my social media to see when the piece is done and available for purchase, and to let me know if you are interested in purchasing an existing print.

I plan to create an order form for all prints once they are available, so please keep an eye out!

Recently I’ve found myself in a bit of a creative drought, which has made me question my right to call myself an artist. I haven’t felt the passion and inspiration that compels me to create, nor have I had the energy to do so. However, looking back on these old photos of myself in creative spaces, how could I not call myself a creative and an artist? How could I not recognize the girl who felt a spark in herself and who continued to cultivate and foster it from a young age?

While having lunch with @naddthenomad the other day, I was told that in the time where I am recharging, relaxing, and not physically creating any work, I am actively creating work. I was reminded that to be an artist is not solely just producing piece after piece - it’s the process, the silence and pauses in between, the lack and influx of inspiration, the connection you make with others and yourself, and reflection. While I am still struggling to find my way out of this creative block, which I have learned is a normal part of the process, I know that at some undetermined time (which I feel is quite soon!), I will feel that inspiration that pushes my brush to a canvas - or at least, a pencil to a sketchbook…

Thank you to everyone who has poured their love and support into me and who have helped me develop over the years, both as an artist and as a person ❤️

This piece is a celebration of the big and small elements that make up black womanhood. from the hoops to the lip liner/ lip gloss combo, to the importance of protecting one’s peace and glow by any means necessary, to the way our presence is noticed as soon as we step into the room. being a black girl is no easy identity to have - however it is no less a burden than it is a blessing. As my Auntie Donna told me in the conversation that inspired this piece;

“Black women are the envy of the world. Our essence, our vibe, our flow - that God gifted melanated glow! We are fearfully and wonderfully made.”

This piece is a celebration of the big and small elements that make up black womanhood. from the hoops to the lip liner/ lip gloss combo, to the importance of protecting one’s peace and glow by any means necessary, to the way our presence is noticed as soon as we step into the room. being a black girl is no easy identity to have - however it is no less a burden than it is a blessing. As my Auntie Donna told me in the conversation that inspired this piece;
